The BCA has around 200 full and associate members. Our members deliver all of the public transport bus services and over 98% of school bus services in New Zealand, as well as the majority of tourism and charter services. We also have great representation from bus/coach manufacturers and key industry suppliers.

A large number of New Zealanders and our visitors use some form of public transport. Of the approximately 130 million public transport passenger boardings last year, over 100 million of them were on buses. In cities like Auckland, public transport demand is forecast to double over the next decade.

Our sector contributes around $1.8 billion to the New Zealand economy with our full members employing over 13,000 staff and creating many employment opportunities in the wider economy for manufacturers and suppliers.

Transport makes up 37% of a typical household’s carbon footprint. Road transport makes up 91.4% of domestic transport emissions with 49.1% of that coming from cars. Electric vehicle (including hybrids) penetration in New Zealand is still low at around 1.9% of all light vehicles. For heavy vehicles, electric truck uptake is very low. In 2022 24% of all new bus registrations in New Zealand were electric. So, where you can, get out of your car and on a bus!
